The holiday was officially introduced in 2004 by a decree of the president of Ukraine to honor the main symbol of the state every year. The date was not chosen by chance – one day before Independence Day. Thus, the day of the national flag of Ukraine emphasizes the continuity of state processes and reminds that independence is inextricably linked with Ukrainian symbols.

For the first time, the blue and yellow flag was raised over the building of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on August 24, 1991-the day of the declaration of independence. This moment became a landmark and was imprinted in history as a symbol of the revival of Ukrainian statehood. And already on January 28, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution that approved the national flag of Ukraine in its modern form.

It is worth noting that the tradition of blue and yellow flowers has much deeper roots. Even in The Times of Kievan Rus and later in the era of the Cossack state, these colors were used in coats of arms, banners and kleinods. In the XIX century, it was the blue and yellow flag that became a symbol of the national movement, and during the time of the Ukrainian people’s Republic of 1917-1921, it received the status of the national flag.

Symbolism of the colors of the modern flag. Today, the interpretation of the colors of the Ukrainian flag is clear and close to every Ukrainian:

Blue represents a peaceful sky, spirituality, harmony and freedom. It is the color of purity of thoughts and eternity, reminding of the high desire of the people for justice and independence.

Yellow color symbolizes wheat fields, land fertility, hard work and vitality of Ukrainians. This is a sign of prosperity, sunny warmth and prosperity.

Together, blue and yellow colors form a harmonious picture – the blue sky over the Golden field, which has become a generally recognized image of Ukraine in the world.

For modern Ukrainians, National Flag Day is not only an official public holiday. This is a day when everyone can feel personally involved in the history of their country. Under this banner, Ukrainians have defended their freedom for centuries – from Cossack campaigns to the Modern Struggle for independence.

On this day, the national flag is solemnly raised in all cities and villages of Ukraine, official ceremonies, unity actions, military marches and cultural events are held. Blue and yellow colors adorn streets, state institutions and homes, reminding that the flag is a symbol of dignity, strength and invincibility of the Ukrainian people.

Yellow over blue and other history of the flag of Ukraine. The Ukrainian flag did not always look like what we are used to seeing today. There were times in history when the colors were arranged in reverse – yellow on top, blue on the bottom. This version had its own symbolism and was widespread in different regions of Ukraine in the XIX – early XX century.

Yellow is the color of The Sun, Ra, and spiritual light. In ancient beliefs, yellow was not only a symbol of earthly wealth or crops. It had a much deeper philosophical meaning. Yellow is the color of The Sun, the source of life on Earth, a symbol of energy and rebirth. In many cultures, The Sun God had the name “RA”, and this symbolism echoes the spiritual search of Ukrainians.

Yellow on top of the flag meant the primacy of the spirit over the material. It is a sign of light, wisdom, intelligence and mentality that shapes a person. The sun represents eternity and at the same time renewal – after all, every day it rises, giving hope and a new beginning. So the Ukrainian people have been reborn for centuries after the most difficult trials.

Blue – as the basis of being. When Blue was at the bottom, it was perceived as the foundation of existence – heaven, water, or even Earth in a spiritual sense. It was a support, an element on which life blooms. In this interpretation, blue symbolized the boundlessness of the world, the depth of the subconscious and peace.

The inverted flag philosophy. The combination of yellow at the top and blue at the bottom reflected the idea that spirit and mind are above the material, that the light of knowledge and solar energy control everything on Earth. It was a banner of search, inner strength and philosophical understanding of being.

However, over time, historical processes and the National Liberation Movement approved the modern version-blue over yellow. Although we now have the national flag in its official form, the memory of other symbols remains as a reminder of the versatility of Ukrainian culture and the depth of its spiritual traditions.

Yellow as the leading energy of the nation. Philosophically understanding, we can say that the yellow color always remains in the heart of the Ukrainian people, regardless of its place on the canvas. It is the color of light that never fades. It embodies the sunny mentality of Ukrainians – openness, optimism, desire for knowledge and deep self-confidence.

That is why in various variations of the flag – whether with yellow at the top or at the bottom – this color continues to symbolize the most important thing: the life-giving light that leads the nation forward.

National Flag Day of Ukraine

National Flag Day of Ukraine is one of the key holidays of the Ukrainian people, which is celebrated annually on August 23. This date is a symbol of respect for the national flag, which embodies the history, struggle and identity of Ukrainians. But if we look deeper, we will see that the blue and yellow flag in different epochs carried different meanings-from highly spiritual to more material. It is this evolution of symbols that deserves special attention.

Officially, the National Flag Day of Ukraine was established in 2004. The date was chosen on the eve of Independence Day to emphasize the indissoluble connection of freedom with national symbols.

The blue and yellow flag was first raised over the Verkhovna Rada on August 24, 1991. And already on January 28, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution that approved this flag as an official one.

And it is worth remembering that the national flag of Ukraine has deeper roots. Its colors were used in the coats of arms of Kievan Rus, Cossack banners, and later – in the symbols of the Ukrainian people’s Republic.

The spiritual meaning of the flag in the past. In the XIX-XX centuries, a common option was where yellow was at the top, and blue – at the bottom. This construction had a deep philosophical basis:

Yellow on top is the sun, light, god Ra, energy and wisdom. It meant the primacy of spirit, thought and mentality over all material things. Yellow was a symbol of consciousness, harmony and spiritual guidance.

Blue below is the foundation of being: heaven, water, or earth as the foundation on which life is built. He represented peace, depth, and eternity.

Thus, the old version of the flag carried the idea: light and spirit control the world, and the material only supports the spiritual. It was the banner of philosophy, inner strength, and faith in the divine.

Substitution of spiritual content. The modern version of the flag gives a different interpretation:

Blue is the Sky,

Yellow-wheat, rye, bread.

That is, the spiritual interpretation was gradually replaced by a more earthly, everyday meaning. Yellow, which once symbolized the sun and spirituality, began to mean food, harvest and prosperity.

Why did this happen?

Political reasons. In the twentieth century, especially in Soviet times, spiritual meanings were deliberately replaced with material ones. The authorities tried to deprive the people of high symbols, replacing them with practical images.

Ease of perception. The image of the “sky over wheat” is easier for the average person to understand than the complex philosophy of the spirit and The Sun.

Changing accents in society. People were taught to think more about survival, bread, and material needs than about developing thinking or spirituality.

The impact of such a change on society? The substitution of symbols affects not only culture, but also national psychology.

Loss of spiritual depth. When the flag ceased to symbolize wisdom and light, but began to mean “bread and Sky”, Ukrainians lost part of the philosophical dimension of their identity.

Shift of emphasis to the material. Yellow as a symbol of food has made people more focused on material survival than spiritual growth.

Weakening of mental unity. The spiritual symbol unites more strongly than the material one. Wheat is important, but it does not give the sacred feeling that yellow, like The Sun and spirit, gave.

Formation of a consumer society. Where food is emphasized instead of wisdom, society begins to think more about material goods than about ideas and meanings.

National Flag Day of Ukraine is a holiday that reminds us not only of modern symbols, but also that the flag once had a much deeper spiritual meaning. Yellow was a sign of The Sun, mind and mentality that raised the nation above the material.

Today we have a symbol that is officially interpreted as “Sky and wheat”. This is a beautiful and understandable image, but it is significantly down-to-earth compared to the ancient philosophy. Did we lose out on it? Yes, because a nation that relies only on the material risks forgetting about the spiritual.

However, the day of the national flag of Ukraine gives us a chance to revive this meaning – to remember that yellow is not only bread on the table, but above all light, wisdom and spiritual energy, without which the real development of society is impossible.

AISU school congratulates you on the National Flag Day of Ukraine!

On August 23, we celebrate a special event – the day of the national flag of Ukraine.
