Independence Day of Ukraine is celebrated annually on August 24 and is the main public holiday of the country. This date is directly related to the declaration of independence in 1991, but the origins of the holiday go back earlier. For the first time, the date of July 16, 1990 was declared independence day – it was then that the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Declaration on state sovereignty of Ukraine, which consolidated political independence, the right of the Ukrainian people to their own self-determination and the priority of national legislation over the Union. Initially, this particular day, July 16, was a holiday, but after the declaration of independence in August 1991, the date changed to August 24. It was on this day that the Verkhovna Rada adopted a historical document – the act of proclamation of independence of Ukraine.

Who started Independence Day and what document? Officially, the Independence Day of Ukraine was established by a resolution of the Verkhovna Rada on February 20, 1992, which clearly stated that from now on the celebration will take place annually on August 24. The initiator was the Ukrainian leadership, which represented the interests of the people in the context of the collapse of the USSR. The basis document was the act of proclamation of independence of Ukraine adopted back in 1991 – it was he who legally confirmed the sovereignty of the state and became the cornerstone for the formation of the holiday.

International law and recognition. As for the international legal aspect, the independence of Ukraine was confirmed by the results of the All-Ukrainian referendum on December 1, 1991. More than 90% of citizens supported the act of declaring independence. This referendum was a key factor, because it was after it that Ukraine’s independence was recognized by the international community. Already in December 1991, many countries of the world officially established diplomatic relations with Kiev. In January 1992, Ukraine received a seat in the UN as an independent state, which finally consolidated its international status. It is worth emphasizing that there was no special document of the United Nations that would “approve” the independence of Ukraine, since the principle of self-determination of Nations is enshrined in the UN Charter. Ukraine was one of the founding countries of the UN back in 1945 as the Ukrainian SSR, but after 1991 its status was transformed into the status of a sovereign state.

Who signed the independence of Ukraine? The act of proclamation of independence of Ukraine was adopted on August 24, 1991 at an extraordinary meeting of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. Its text was signed by the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Leonid Kravchuk, who in the same year became the first president of Ukraine. Together with him, the Act was signed by other high-ranking officials and deputies of the Verkhovna Rada representing various political factions. 346 deputies took part in the vote for the declaration of independence – an absolute majority of the parliament. These votes and signatures became the legal basis for the existence of a sovereign Ukrainian state.

Modern meaning of the Independence Day of Ukraine. Independence Day of Ukraine today is not only a public holiday, but also a symbol of the people’s struggle for freedom and the right to be the master of their own land. After 1991, the date of August 24 became the starting point of modern history, from which the formation of its own political system, foreign policy, Army, economy and culture began. For millions of Ukrainians, this holiday is associated with the restoration of historical justice and the completion of a long process of striving for independence, which stretched through many generations – from the time of Kievan Rus and the Cossack state to the liberation struggle of the XX century.

Independence Day gained special significance after the beginning of Russian aggression in 2014 and a full-scale invasion in 2022. Ukrainians realized that independence is not only an official status confirmed by documents and international law, but a daily struggle to preserve freedom, language, culture and the future of the state. Now August 24 is perceived as a reminder of the price that people pay for the right to live in their own country, as well as as a day of unity, pride and invincibility.

Since the declaration of independence, the celebrations on August 24 have become an integral part of the national culture. Traditionally, military parades, concerts, laying flowers in memory of prominent figures of Ukrainian history, solemn speeches of the president and statesmen were held in Kiev and other cities. The main place of celebrations has always been the capital’s Khreshchatyk Street and Independence Square, where thousands of citizens gathered.
In addition to official events, Independence Day has always been a holiday of Ukrainian culture – from Vyshyvanka parades to folk music festivals and fairs. On this day, blue and yellow flags fly all over the country, and the main squares turn into hotbeds of celebrations. After 2014, volunteer and patriotic initiatives that emphasize the unity of society in the struggle for independence became increasingly important.

During the war years, the format of celebrations changed: instead of loud parades with ” more restrained events aimed at honoring the memory of fallen soldiers and demonstrating the invincibility of the Ukrainian people. At the same time, the symbolism of Independence Day has become even more important – every Ukrainian, raising the national flag or wearing an embroidered shirt, expresses his personal involvement in a great common cause.

Independence Day as a factor of national identity. August 24 is not only a state date, but also the basis for the formation of national identity. After all, independence is the right to determine your own path, have your own language, culture and traditions. It is on this day that Ukrainians think about the price at which freedom is acquired and what significance it has for future generations.

Thanks to this holiday, new generations of Ukrainians are brought up in the spirit of patriotism and responsibility for the future of the state. Independence Day creates a sense of belonging to a great history and at the same time calls on every citizen to contribute to the strengthening of the state.

Independence Day at AISU school

Independence Day of Ukraine is a holiday that unites all Ukrainians, regardless of their place of residence or age.
