For many, this is a time of joy, warmth, generosity, as well as an opportunity to reflect on what it means to do good and be a light for others. St. Nicholas is one of the brightest figures in the spiritual history of mankind, and his day has become a real symbol of mercy, protection and children’s hope.

Historical origins of the holiday,or who was St. Nicholas? St. Nicholas was born in the third century in the city of Patara in the Lycian region (modern Turkey). Since childhood, he was distinguished by kindness, mercy and a desire to help people. After becoming bishop of the Lycian worlds, Nicholas became famous for numerous good deeds, which he did quietly and imperceptibly. He helped the poor, saved convicts, stood up for the innocent, treated the sick, and even, according to church traditions, resurrected people.

In the IV century, St. Nicholas took part in the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, where he actively opposed the heresy of Arius. After his death, he became one of the most popular saints of the East and West due to his many miracles and a model of sacrificial love for one’s neighbor.

In parallel with the official church tradition, many legends and legends arose around his name, and the day of his memory gradually turned into one of the brightest winter holidays.

Legends about St. Nicholas, what did the peoples of the world tell?

A gift to three poor sisters.

One of the most famous legends tells about how Nikolai saved three sisters whose family did not have money for a dowry. Their father was forced to think about the shameful step of giving his daughters into slavery. After learning about this, Nikolai secretly threw bags of gold through the window of the house at night. According to another version, he threw gold into the chimney, and it fell into socks that were drying by the fireplace. This story is considered the source of the modern tradition of putting gifts in stockings and shoes.

Rescue of sailors.

St. Nicholas is the patron saint of navigators. Legend has it that he once saved a ship during a terrible storm by appearing on deck and calming the elements. Since then, sailors all over the world have turned to him with a prayer before going to sea.

Protecting the innocent.

Another legend tells about three unjustly convicted soldiers. Nicholas appeared in a dream to the ruler and ordered a review of the verdict. The soldiers were acquitted, and Nicholas forever entered the popular imagination as a substitute for the weak and offended.

Ukrainian traditions of St. Nicholas Day.

Ukrainians honor Mykola as one of the main patrons of their people. Since ancient times, he was considered the protector of children, travelers, Warriors, the poor and the sick. In Ukraine, this day has a special home and Family character.

Pillow gifts – on the night of December 5-6, children expect a miracle: if they were obedient, St. Nicholas brings sweets, fruits, toys; if they were naughty, they can get a rod. But even the rod here has a symbolic meaning-it is a reminder of self-improvement, not a punishment.

Do good deeds-in many communities there is a tradition to do charity on this day: help orphanages, hospitals, and disadvantaged families. It is believed that Nicholas comes through the hands of people.

Folk beliefs – our ancestors said:

“If it’s warm on St. Nicholas, winter will be fierce.”

“St. Nicholas brings winter to Earth”.

“Nikolai-zimi Krai”: after this day, real frosts usually began.

Gostina for Nikolai – in some regions it was customary to put a separate plate and a piece of bread on the table – “so that Nikolai tasted”. It is a symbol of hospitality and gratitude for God’s care.

St. Nicholas in World Culture: the way to the image of Santa Claus.

Due to the widespread cult of St. Nicholas, his image was transformed over time. In Germany, he became the figure of Nicholas, in the Netherlands – Sinterklaas. It was Dutch emigrants who brought the image of Sinterklaas to America, where he later evolved into the modern Santa Claus – a cheerful old man with a white beard who distributes gifts.

Although their images differ, each is based on the same figure – the good Bishop Nicholas, who performed charity and helped people secretly.

Philosophical meaning of the holiday: about kindness, generosity and miracles:

1. Holiday of good deeds – St. Nicholas Day reminds: the most valuable gifts are not things. This is attention, love, support, care. Good doesn’t need witnesses. Like Nicholas, we can help quietly without looking for gratitude.

2. The Miracle begins with a person – although children are waiting for the heavenly patron, adults know very well: Nicholas comes through us. in every good action, we become carriers of light and warmth.

3. Responsibility for one’s neighbor – all the legends about Nicholas say one thing: true faith manifests itself in actions. He did not fight for teaching with words – his weapon was love. The philosophical meaning of the holiday reminds us of the importance of empathy and compassion.

4. The spiritual symbol of children’s faith – in childhood, each of us believes in miracles. With age, this faith fades, but St. Nicholas Day gives us the opportunity to return it at least for one day – not only for children, but also for adults. Miracles exist where there is kindness.

5. Respect for traditions – the holiday reminds us of the importance of connecting generations. Our ancestors created rich customs that convey not only cultural heritage, but also deep morality: the world becomes a better place thanks to human mercy.

Moral and spiritual lessons of the holiday:

Generosity is not wealth, but a state of mind. Nicholas gave the latter, having nothing in return.

Good is more important than glory. He helped secretly-that’s why he became an example for millions.

The power of love is stronger than fear. He was not afraid to speak out against injustice, saving the weak.

Children’s faith is a spiritual light. By supporting this light in children, we create a society of Kind Hearts.

Miracles are born where there is compassion. There are no “small” good deeds – every gesture can change someone’s life.

Why St. Nicholas Day remains relevant today.

In the modern world, where there is often a lack of sincerity and mutual support, St. Nicholas Day reminds us of simple but extremely important things. This holiday teaches us to see our neighbor, sympathize, help, and be not indifferent. It teaches that good does not age or go out of fashion.

Each of us can become a little Nikolai – for a family, a neighbor, a stranger. And so, through small, quiet, but warm actions, the world will remain bright.

St. Nicholas in AISU

The Feast of St. Nicholas always smells like a miracle. This is the day when something indescribably warm and magical sounds in the air, and children wake up with eyes full of expectation of a miracle. But this year the miracle was double – after all, St. Nicholas himself came to our AISU school, bringing with him a bag of surprises, a bag of laughter and a whole suitcase of magical stories.

To be honest, it seemed that Nikolai descended not just from his heavenly sleigh Express – but directly into the very heart of our school, and from that everything around began to sparkle with new year’s radiance. The students were laughing, the teachers were smiling, and even the hallways seemed to be singing carols.

And now – the most interesting thing: stories about what really happened on that magical day when Nikolai crossed the threshold of AISU<

How St. Nicholas found the director's office (and didn't get lost!)

Usually Nikolai visits schools through a window or a magic chimney, but he decided to go to AISU "in a modern way" -through the main entrance, greeted the guards and politely wiped the snow from his heavily snow - covered boots.

As soon as he was in the corridor, he immediately met a group of first-graders who shouted in one voice:

- Wow! Are you real?!

Nikolai winked:

- I would also like to know&if the real St. Nicholas, then he smells like tangerines. Shall we check?

And the kids, like real little holiday experts, started sniffing the air around him. The verdict was unanimous:

- Ours! Real! Tangerine!

That's how he started his school route - with a great fragrance and an even better mood.

Story one: a secret special operation "under the pillow"

Second-grade students really wanted to check out one important question:
does Nikolai know how to put gifts under his pillow if there is a whole class in front of him who is carefully watching?

As soon as Nikolai entered the office, the children prepared a whole exhibition - everyone put a small pillow on the desk and announced:

- We have opened an experimental laboratory!

Nikolai laughed so loudly that even the garlands on the board began to tremble with laughter.

In order not to spoil the children's scientific research, Nikolai turned away, threw his mitt up - and no one understood how - but in a second small chocolates appeared under each pillow.

- Was it magic or technique? the children asked."a little bit of this, a little bit of the other," Nikolai replied and winked.

Story two: how third-graders taught Nikolai to dance "Penguin"

In the third grade, Nikolai was greeted even more cheerfully. The teacher turned on the music, and the children began to dance their favorite dance - "Penguin".

Nikolai was a little confused - how many years has he been in the world, and such a dance has not yet seen!

- Well, Saint, will you study? the children asked.< br> – me? A penguin? Why not! I’m a modern Nikolai!

A minute later, the Saint was already stamping his feet, waving his arms, and swaying to the right and left. His long robe flew funny in different directions, but he tried so hard that all the children laughed with happiness.

At the end of the dance, Nikolai solemnly said:

– Now I can safely open my own dance school for Angels!

Story three: big negotiations about rods

A serious meeting took place in high school. Ninth-graders decided to find out if it is true that Nikolai brings rods to those who sometimes “get a little” naughty.

– We want to negotiate! “they said. – Perhaps let’s do without rods this year?

Nikolai pretended to think:

– But what about traditions?

The children began to convince:

– We are improving!
– We are trying!
– We even do our homework the first time!

Nikolai slyly looked at the Class:

– Well, the negotiations are successful. I have another option: I will replace the rods with a list of good deeds that you must complete before the end of the year.

The Children agreed instantly-this is how the first contract in the history of AISU appeared between the students and St. Nicholas through the mouth of Honor.

Story Four: how the fourth grade caught Nikolai on a trick

In the fourth grade, children staged a real journalistic investigation.

– We want to know how you manage to get around all the schools in the world in one night! they said Seriously.

Nikolai cleared his throat, sat down on a chair and solemnly said:

Is a… secret.

But the children were persistent. They turned on “imaginary voice recorders”, prepared “notes”, and one boy even put on glasses to look “very solid”.

Then Nikolai gave up:

– Okay, I’ll tell you a secret. In fact, I use the joy accelerator. The more laughter and kindness there is on the planet, the faster I move.

The children applauded and promised to laugh all day to help Nikolai with his work.

Story five: kids from kindergarten and “beard check”

The youngest students were waiting for Nikolai with special trepidation. As soon as he appeared in the doorway, the kids ran towards him like Little Angels.

But they wanted to know the most important thing: is the beard real?

One daredevil pulled – the beard did not come off.
another stroked-fluffy.
the third girl stared for a long time, and then decided:

– It’s magical! Definitely magical!

Nikolai agreed. And then he called the children closer and whispered:

– If the beard wasn’t magical, I would never have endured so many winters in a row!

A day full of warmth! All classes met St. Nicholas in a special way. Someone prepared poems and songs, someone – drawings, someone – “leaf museum” with wishes. The school turned into a real celebration of dreams and kindness.

And Nikolai, saying goodbye, said very important words:

– I come to where I am expected. And here at AISU, all hearts were waiting for me. So I’ll be back again!

And it seems that even the school door, when he left, quietly said goodbye to him!”

Why was St. Nicholas ‘ visit to AISU special?

Because this holiday is not just about gifts.
it’s about laughter, about warm meetings, about kindness, about sincerity and that magic lives where good hearts live.

And AISU has a lot of hearts.
And they all fought in the same rhythm that day:
The Rhythm of joy and festive wonder.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Your browser does not support the video tag.

        [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTVCcG9wdXBfYW55dGhpbmclMjBpZCUzRCUyMjExODIlMjIlNUQ=[/vc_raw_html][vc_column_text]

m.
