The Maslenitsa Holiday, also known in the Ukrainian tradition as Kolodiy, is one of the oldest and brightest calendar rites of our people. It combines pre-Christian beliefs, agricultural symbols, family values and later Christian understanding of the time before Lent. This is not just a week of pancakes and fun – it is a complex system of Customs, symbols and spiritual meanings that have shaped the worldview of Ukrainians for centuries.<\/p>\n
Maslenitsa is a traditional folk holiday of seeing off winter and meeting spring, which is celebrated in the last week before Lent in the Eastern Christian tradition. In the Ukrainian version, it has a deeper name – Kolodiy. The very word ” Kolodiy “is associated with the rite of” kolodiy ” – a symbolic log or wooden bar, which was used in comic rituals related to marriage and procreation.<\/p>\n
In the church calendar, this period is called syrup or cheese week. In the Orthodox tradition, this is the last stage of preparation for Lent, when meat is no longer consumed, but dairy products, cheese, butter, eggs and fish are allowed.<\/p>\n
Thus, Maslenitsa is a transitional moment between winter and spring, between satiety and abstinence, between noisy celebration and spiritual concentration.<\/p>\n
In the Ukrainian tradition, the original name is Kolodiy. It is this name that reflects the deep pre-Christian content of the holiday. It is associated with the image of the “log” – a symbol of fertility, procreation, and the birth of a new life.<\/p>\n
After the adoption of Christianity, the holiday was integrated into the church calendar and it was called Cheese week or syrup week. In different regions of Ukraine, there were also names: Puscha, Maslenitsa, start, Zagoviny.<\/p>\n
In Russia, a similar holiday is known as Maslenitsa, but the Ukrainian Kolodiy has its own ritual and symbolism, characterized by accents – in particular, a stronger connection with family and marriage themes.<\/p>\n
The holiday does not have a specific founder. It originated in pre-Christian times as part of the agrarian calendar of the Slavs. similar Spring Rites existed among many Indo-European peoples.<\/p>\n
After the baptism of Rus under Prince Vladimir The Great in 988, many pagan holidays were reinterpreted and integrated into the Christian calendar. So it happened with Kolodiy – he preserved folk traditions, but acquired a new spiritual content as a preparation for Lent.<\/p>\n

In the pre-Christian tradition, Kolodiy was associated with the celebration of the spring renewal of nature, the awakening of the Earth and the sun. Some studies mention a possible connection with solar deities, in particular with the image of Dazhbog – the patron saint of the sun and light in Slavic mythology.<\/p>\n
However, the main meaning of the holiday is not the worship of a specific deity, but the celebration of the cycle of nature: the end of winter, the beginning of a new agricultural year, the awakening of fertility.<\/p>\n
In the Christian sense, this is no longer a pagan rite, but a period of spiritual preparation for the resurrection of Christ – the most important holiday of the church year.<\/p>\n

During the lessons, children got acquainted with the history of Kolodia, learned about the significance of the holiday in the life of Ukrainians, about the traditions of making pancakes and the symbolism of the sun, which represents warmth, light and the beginning of a new life. Students listened with delight to how in ancient times people gathered as families, arranged feasts, asked for forgiveness from each other and enjoyed the first breaths of spring. For the children, this was not just a theory – they were preparing to live this tradition with their own hands.<\/p>\n

Fifth-grade students kneaded pancake batter with the seriousness of real chefs: they carefully broke eggs, added flour, and mixed it to a uniform consistency. In every movement, there was a sense of diligence and a desire to do everything as best as possible. Some of the students showed special creativity, creating whole culinary compositions: pancake “cakes”, sunny patterns of berries, decorative ornaments made of fruits. They were real little culinary masterpieces that combined tradition and modern imagination. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, support and a sense of common cause.<\/p>\n
The holiday was not limited to cooking. Children participated in Fun Games, sang songs, communicated and shared their impressions. An important part of the event was a reminder of the value of goodwill and mutual respect. Students learned to work in a team, help each other, and enjoy joint achievements. Each class brought its own idea, its own creative touch, and as a result, the school space turned into a real ethnographic workshop.<\/p>\n
A special place in the celebration was taken by the culinary part. Seventh-graders are already more independent and responsible, so they took great pleasure in preparing traditional pancakes and other dishes of cheese week. Under the guidance of teachers, they planned recipes, distributed responsibilities, prepared ingredients, and worked as a real team. During the cooking process, there was an atmosphere of coherence and support: someone kneaded the dough, someone was responsible for the filling, and others thought through the serving of dishes. The pancakes turned out to be Ruddy, fragrant, generously decorated with berries, honey and cottage cheese. Each dish looked like a small culinary work of art.<\/p>\n
