Teacher's day

Teacher’s day 5 October, 2025

What is this day and why is October 5? Every year, on October 5, the world celebrates World Teachers ‘ Day. This date was set by UNESCO in 1994, and its choice is not accidental – it was on October 5, 1966 that an intergovernmental conference was held, at which the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation on the status of teachers was adopted.

For Ukraine – the holiday of education workers-there is a tradition to celebrate it on the first Sunday of October. In 2025, this Sunday falls on October 5, so the Ukrainian celebration coincides with the international date.

Here’s what the full picture looks like:

  • On an international scale – October 5 as a permanent date of World Teacher’s day, established by UNESCO.
  • In Ukraine – the celebration of education workers on the first Sunday of October, and in 2025 this falls on October 5.
  • So, in 2025, both holidays (Ukrainian and international) coincide in date.

In this article, we will look at the history of teacher’s day, how this day is celebrated, important questions and detailed answers, as well as the features of celebration in Ukraine in a modern context.

The idea of honoring teachers dates back to ancient times – in different cultures, teachers had a special prestige, often they were congratulated on certain days of memory, when they were not just teachers, but mentors, carriers of knowledge, moral guidelines.

In the XX century, some countries already had National Teacher’s days-for example, in Brazil, Sao Paulo celebrated teacher’s day since 1947. These national initiatives provided the basis for an international systematic approach to honoring educators.

In the former USSR in 1965, the official “teacher’s day” was established, which was celebrated on the first Sunday of October. This was done in order to popularize the role of teachers in society, emphasize their social significance, as well as create a festive moment for the school.

In independent Ukraine, after gaining statehood, this tradition was preserved, but with a national flavor. In 1994, the president of Ukraine signed a decree that officially established the day of education workers – on the first Sunday of October.

Thus, the Ukrainian celebration has a certain “local” format: not a fixed date, but “the first Sunday of October”. But the International Date – October 5-is constant.

In 1994, UNESCO (together with other partners) declared October 5 World Teachers ‘ Day to mark the anniversary of the adoption of the recommendation on the status of teachers in 1966.

This recommendation (ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, 1966) has become a key international document that sets standards for the rights, obligations, status, working conditions and training of teachers. In addition, there is an additional UNESCO recommendation of 1997, which concerns teachers of higher education institutions.

Thus, October 5 is a day when the world reminds about the importance of teachers, their rights, challenges and needs.

Why was October 5 chosen? The reason for choosing this date is precisely because an intergovernmental conference was held on this day in 1966, at which a document on the status of teachers was adopted. Thus, the date is symbolically associated with the international recognition of the teaching profession.

Thus, teacher’s day is not just a “holiday of teachers”, but also an internationally recognized symbol of solidarity with teachers, an opportunity to discuss their role, highlight the problems of the education system and call for changes.

Below is a list of important and popular questions about teacher’s day, let’s also look at them.

1. Why is Ukraine not a fixed date, but the first Sunday of October? Historically, in the USSR, teacher’s day was established as the “first Sunday of October”. After independence, Ukraine preserved this tradition, but officially fixed the day of education workers (teachers) by presidential decree on the first Sunday of October. Since the date is movable (it depends on the calendar of the year), sometimes it coincides with October 5 (as in 2025), and sometimes it does not.

This has both advantages and disadvantages:

  • Advantage: you can adjust events to a weekend or a convenient format.
  • Disadvantage: not every year the Ukrainian celebration coincides with the International Date of October 5.

In 2025-a coincidence.

2. What is the theme of teacher’s day in 2025? According to sources, the theme of World Teacher’s day 2025 is “Recasting teaching as a collaborative profession”. This means that the emphasis is placed on the fact that it is not easy for a teacher to work alone – it is important to create conditions for cooperation, mentoring, exchange of experience, and teamwork.

In addition, the very idea of the International Day is not just a celebration, but an opportunity to discuss the challenges facing the teaching profession and find ways to support, develop and reform.

3. What does teacher’s day want – just a celebration or something more? This is a combination of:

  1. Society, students, and parents express their gratitude to those who teach, mentor, and shape the future.
  2. Teacher’s day is an opportunity to remind about the role of teachers, their difficulties, and ask: Are they provided with decent working conditions?
  3. Through conferences, forums, discussions, needs are voiced: raising salaries, improving the material base of schools, modern approaches in education.
  4. This is a chance for teachers themselves to look at their profession from a new perspective, find partners, and exchange experience.

So, teacher’s day is not only a celebration of flowers and greeting cards, but a point when society focuses on the educational system and the people who work in it.

4. How do different countries celebrate Teacher’s day? The method of celebration varies depending on the country, culture, and educational tradition. Here are some examples:

  • China: although in China teacher’s day is celebrated on September 10 (not October 5), schools hold festive ceremonies, students give teachers flowers and postcards.
  • India: teacher’s day-September 5 (in memory of S. Radhakrishyan). Students take on the roles of teachers and organize cultural events.
  • Australia: teacher’s day is celebrated on the last Friday of October.
  • Countries celebrating October 5: many countries, in order to agree with the International Date, hold events on this day – conferences, awards, ceremonies, performances, concerts.
  • Special formats: in some countries, some lessons are canceled on teacher’s day – or thematic lectures, open events, discussions, seminars on professional development are held.

Thus, the celebration combines formal recognition, cultural events, professional exchanges, and local initiatives.

5. What is traditionally done in schools on teacher’s day? In the school context, this is a special day with a number of well – established (and not so well-established) practices:

  • Concerts, performances, holiday programs. Students prepare songs, dances, skits, performances, and congratulate teachers.
  • Self-Government day /”teacher for one day”. High school students sometimes become “teachers”: they conduct lessons, take on administrative roles, and adjust their daily plan.
  • Reduced lessons or a day without lessons (or with a partially changed schedule).
  • Greetings and gifts. Students and parents give teachers postcards, flowers, souvenirs, symbolic gifts (office supplies, sweets).
  • Awarding the best teachers. Presentation of certificates, commendations, distinctions, and awards.
  • Invitation of graduates /guests. Former students, guests of honor, and artists are often invited.
  • Methodological events, conferences, round tables. Awareness of professional growth is not only a skit, but also the training of teachers themselves.
  • Publications, interviews, blog materials. School websites and local media inform about teachers and their contributions.
  • Photo and video actions, flash mobs, social networks.

In times of war or crisis, the format may change: fewer large-scale concerts, more warm words, online meetings, and volunteer initiatives.

6. What’s so special about celebrating 2025? In 2025, when teacher’s Day falls on October 5, Ukrainian schools have the opportunity to:

  • Hold a celebration synchronized with the international date.
  • Strengthen media accents – pay attention not only locally, but also in an international context.
  • Use the topic of “joint profession” to discuss changes in the school environment – how to strengthen interaction between teachers, how to support young teachers, how to create a network of cooperation.
  • Hold online events, connect schools in different cities/regions, and exchange experience.
  • In conditions of war or difficult circumstances, pay attention to safety, psychological support, and adaptive training formats.

It is quite possible that in 2025 in Ukraine at such a holiday there will be not only concerts, but also thematic discussions, podcasts, interviews with teachers, flash mobs – and this will also become a kind of platform for the voice of teachers.

7. What challenges and challenges do teachers face? When we celebrate Teacher’s day, it is important not only to compose congratulatory poems, but also to be aware of and talk about challenges:

  • Low wages and wage instability. Often, teachers ‘ earnings do not match their contribution, and many teachers leave or change fields.
  • Overload and a large amount of administrative work. Writing, reports, and bureaucracy “eat up” time that could be devoted to students or preparation.
  • Insufficient provision of material and technical means. Schools sometimes do not have equipment, textbooks, or modern technologies.
  • The need for professional development. Constant updating of knowledge, techniques, and digital literacy is a time requirement, but it is not always supported.
  • Psychological stress. Working with teenagers, conflicts, great emotions, unstable environment (especially in times of crisis or war).
  • Social prestige of the profession. In many societies, teachers have high expectations, but not everyone appreciates their vocation with dignity.
  • The gap between theory and practice in the school system. Outdated standards, system inertia, and resistance to change.
  • Inequality of conditions between regions. Teachers in rural areas or in areas with difficult conditions often have fewer resources.
  • Loss of personnel, outflow of young people from the profession.

On teacher’s day, it is useful to talk about these problems, not just congratulate them, but support them and look for solutions.

8. How can students and parents make this day special? Here are some ideas:

  • Write sincere postcards, letters, greetings with personal words of gratitude
  • Create video greetings, photo collages, thematic booklets
  • Organize a small event: concert, poetry evening, contest “My teacher”
  • Suggest a self-management day or a lesson that you have prepared yourself
  • Give symbolic items – but not expensive gifts, but useful ones (stationery, motivational posters, environmental gifts)
  • Invite the teacher to a symbolic tea party, conversation, exchange of opinions
  • Support teachers in difficult times – help in preparing materials, volunteer assistance to the school
  • In social networks: distribute photos, publications with gratitude, make flash mobs

How exactly will teacher’s day be celebrated on October 5, 2025 in Ukraine and around the world? In 2025, when the Ukrainian celebration coincides with the international date, Ukraine is likely to see the following elements:

  • Holiday lines and events in schools. Congratulations to principals, students, and presentation of certificates.
  • Concerts, thematic programs. Students will prepare performances, songs, skits, and surprises.
  • Self-Government day. High school students can conduct lessons, take on the roles of teachers, administration.
  • Awards. There may be awards, certificates, commendations from the authorities or sponsors.
  • Online format. If necessary or on the initiative – video meetings, broadcasts of festive events, recordings of congratulations.
  • Flash mobs and Instagram /Telegram promotions.
  • Support for teachers. In difficult times (for example, in areas affected by conflicts) – providing security, psychological support, symbolic gifts.
  • Magazines, newspapers, and school websites will publish interviews with teachers, their stories, photo and video reviews.

In the current context (which may include war, instability, quarantine or security restrictions), the following features are possible:

  • Fewer large-scale concerts – more modest events
  • Instead of physical gifts – digital or symbolic
  • Enhanced security measures, flexible formats (hybrid, mixed)
  • More emphasis on moral support, assessment of the internal resource of teachers

Since October 5 is the day of international celebration, the following activities will be planned in the global dimension:

  • Thematic campaigns of UNESCO and partners
  • Publications, press releases, media materials about the role of teachers
  • Conferences, webinars, panel discussions
  • Forms of experience exchange between countries
  • Global flash mobs, hashtags, social campaigns
  • Publication of statistics on the state of teachers, challenges, appeals to governments

Thus, a school in Ukraine can “link” to the international context, making the celebration more visible on the scale of education in the world.

  3. Involve teachers in training, do not neglect their opinion – let the events be comfortable and meaningful.
  4. Physical activities + online broadcasts for parents and the public.
  5. Symbolic gifts, not necessarily expensive items – it is more important that the gift has meaning: books, environmental souvenirs, motivational posters, kind words.

  7. Around the topic of the profession: round tables, debates, mini-conferences for teachers.
  8. Volunteer actions, for example, students can help the school – clean up the territory, equip the classroom, organize something useful.
  9. Post-holiday format, ask teachers: what they liked, what can be improved, ideas for the future.

So, teacher’s day on October 5, 2025 is a special case: Ukrainian teachers celebrate their day on a day that has already become an international symbol of recognition of the role of teachers in the world. This is a good opportunity not just to remember teachers, but to ask systemic questions: What working conditions are they provided with? How can I support their professional development?

Let this day be not only a celebration of concerts and uplifts, but also a day of real support and recognition: warm words, sincere gratitude – and concrete steps to improve school reality.

Teacher’s day at AISU school

How did we celebrate October 5, 2025? On October 5, 2025, AISU school had a special atmosphere. As soon as the sun touched the school yard, everyone felt that today was not an ordinary day. This is teacher’s day, one of the warmest and most heartfelt holidays of the year. A day when every student, every parent, and even every school employee has the opportunity to say the most important word – Thank you.

Preparations for teacher’s day at AISU school began long before October 5. Students of different classes joined creative teams to make this day unforgettable. Someone wrote poems and songs, someone prepared skits, and someone made jewelry, posters and photo zones.

The school corridor gradually turned into a magical gallery with flowers, colored ribbons, stands with inscriptions ” our teachers are the best!”, “you teach with your heart”and” thank you for every day!».

Handmade postcards-small masterpieces from elementary school students – became a special pride. Each with its own story, painted smiles and signatures of children’s hands.

– “We want teachers to smile all day!”- fifth-graders shared their plans, decorating the assembly hall with sparkles.

The solemn part is an inspiring beginning!

At Ten in the morning, the AISU school assembly hall was filled to capacity. The festive event was opened by the presenters – high school students who took to the stage to the tune of a calm piano. Shots appeared on the screen: photos of teachers at work, fragments of lessons, moments of joy, joint trips, laughter, emotions.

This video, created by the school’s Media Club, did not leave anyone indifferent. Some of the teachers even quietly wiped away a tear.

After the opening speech of the director of the AISU school Elena Kovalenko, words of gratitude were expressed:

” being a teacher means bringing light every day. And even when it is dark around, it is the teachers who remain the ones who show the way. We are grateful to everyone who chose this difficult but noble cause”.

Applause, smiles, flowers – the audience seemed to radiate gratitude.

Self-government Day-a tradition that unites

One of the most beloved traditions of AISU school is Student Self-Government day, when high school students become “teachers” for one day.

This year, students of grades 10-11 prepared seriously: “schedules” were developed, notes were prepared, and even their own educational materials were created. Someone conducted an English lesson, someone-mathematics or history, and someone decided to try himself as a school administrator.

– ” It’s not easy at all! – one of the “temporary teachers” admitted. – We thought it would be fun, but we realized how much responsibility lies with our mentors.

Students who visited “on the other side of the desk” admitted that after that they began to respect their teachers even more. And it is this empathy that is the most valuable result of the day of self – government.

Gift from the heart

After the concert, teachers were waiting for another surprise – a “thank you wall” located in the school lobby. On a large canvas, students wrote short messages to their teachers:

Thank you for your patience!”you taught me to dream!”your lessons are the best part of my day!»

Everyone could leave a wish, and by the end of the day, the board was literally strewn with colorful notes.

And in the lobby of the school there was a “gratitude Tea Room” – a cozy corner with warm tea, cookies and quiet music. Students served their teachers, invited them to relax, socialize, and take photos in memory.

At that moment, the school was in the mood of a real holiday – without pathos, but with great sincerity.

The holiday is over, but the feeling of warmth has not disappeared. On the contrary, throughout the week, the AISU school was in a high mood. Students continued to congratulate their teachers, bring sweets, write short messages of gratitude in an electronic diary, and take photos together.

Parents also joined in-some recorded a video with words of gratitude, others helped with the organization of treats.

And on the school website”Our teachers – our pride” there was a special section “our teachers-our pride”, where each teacher received his own page with a photo, a short description, a quote and comments from students.

Teacher’s day at AISU school 2025 was not just a holiday – it was a day of sincerity, humanity, and mutual respect. Students showed that they know how to be grateful, and teachers – that their work is not in vain.

This holiday has become a reminder: school is not only a place where people study, but also a place where they live with their hearts. Where every day is a new step towards knowledge, and every teacher is a guide who shows the way.

“We don’t just teach children,” Irina concluded. – Together with them, we learn to love the world, people and ourselves. And if today they were able to give us so much good, then we are on the right track.”

In the AISU school calendar, October 5 is now marked not only as a professional holiday, but as a day when the school has become an even stronger family.

All these flowers, smiles, applause, children’s hugs are not just attributes of a festive morning. This is a living gratitude to those who put a piece of their soul into their children every day.

And if the world is based on kindness, then it is the teachers who pass it on.
