New Year’s holidays at AISU school and kindergarten
Christmas
Christmas is one of the brightest, deepest and most anticipated holidays in the Christian world. In Ukraine, on December 25, as in many countries of Europe and the world, Christmas is officially celebrated, honoring the birth of Jesus Christ – the son of God, the Savior of humanity. This holiday combines a deep spiritual meaning, centuries-old history, rich folk traditions and a unique culture that has been formed over the centuries.
History of the Nativity of Christ.
The history of the Nativity of Christ dates back more than two thousand years ago. According to the Gospel, Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem in Judea to the Virgin Mary. His birth took place in modest conditions – in a cave or stable, where Mary and Joseph found shelter. The baby was placed in a manger, symbolizing humility, simplicity and the closeness of God to man.
Shepherds were the first to know about the birth of the Savior, to whom the Angels announced the good news. Subsequently, the Magi from the East came to Bethlehem, who were brought by the star of Bethlehem. They brought gifts – gold, frankincense and myrrh, which had symbolic meaning: royal dignity, divinity and the future sacrifice of Christ.
Christmas has been the central event of the Christian calendar since the first centuries. Initially, the date of the celebration was different, but over time, the celebration of December 25 was fixed in the Western tradition. In Ukraine, after calendar changes, Christmas on December 25 has acquired a special meaning as a symbol of spiritual unity with the European Christian tradition.
Christmas in Ukraine.
In Ukraine, Christmas has a special place in the culture and spiritual life of the people. This is not only a church holiday, but also an important family event that unites generations. Preparation for the Nativity of Christ begins with Advent or the Nativity fast – a time of spiritual purification, prayer, abstinence, and good deeds.
On the day of the Nativity of Christ, Ukrainians attend festive services, where solemn prayers, Christmas Psalms and carols are played. Temples are filled with light, the smell of incense and a sense of joy. The central theme of the services is the sacrament of the incarnation of God, the coming of Christ into the world for the salvation of people.
Christmas in Ukraine is also a symbol of hope, peace and the victory of light over darkness. This holiday is especially deeply felt in difficult times for the country, when people turn to God with prayers for peace, protection and the future.
Carols and songs for Christmas.
Carols and Christmas songs are an integral part of the Nativity of Christ. Ukrainian carols are a unique phenomenon of folk culture that combines Christian motifs with ancient traditions. They glorify the birth of Jesus Christ, exalt the Holy Family, and wish the owners good, health, and prosperity.
Christmas carols are performed by both children and adults. Groups of carolers go from house to house, carrying the Christmas News. Often they hold the Christmas star – a symbol of the star of Bethlehem, which announced the birth of the Savior to the world.
The texts of Christmas carols are extremely deep and poetic:
- They talk about the birth of Christ;
- Glorify God;
- Convey the spirit of joy and light;
- Remind of love, mercy and unity.
Among the most famous carols are “a new Joy has become”, “good evening to you, pan gospodar”, “God Is Born eternal”. Each of them is a kind of prayer sung from the heart.
Religious and spiritual features of the Nativity of Christ.
The Nativity of Christ has a deep theological significance. This feast of incarnation is the moment when God becomes man. In Christian teaching, it is the Nativity of Christ that is the beginning of the saving mission of Jesus Christ, which will end with his resurrection.
One of the main ideas of the Nativity of Christ is humility. Christ is born not in a palace, but in poverty, showing that true greatness lies in love and service. Another important theme is light: Jesus is called the light of the world, which comes to dispel the darkness of sin and fear.
On the day of the Nativity of Christ, believers especially pray:
- For world peace;
- For the family;
- For the forgiveness of sins;
- For spiritual renewal.
Many Christians confess and receive Communion on the eve or on the day of the Nativity of Christ itself, seeing this as an opportunity to start a new stage of life with a pure heart.
Symbols of the Nativity of Christ.
Christmas is rich in symbols, each of which has a deep meaning:
- Star of Bethlehem-a sign of God’s Providence;
- Manger-a symbol of humility;
- Candle-light of Christ;
- Christmas tree-eternal life;
- Bells are good news.
In the Ukrainian tradition, Christmas is also accompanied by nativity scenes – theatrical performances that recreate the scene of the birth of Christ. Nativity scenes combine biblical themes with folk humor and morality.
Meaning of the Nativity of Christ today.
In the modern world, Christmas remains extremely relevant. It reminds us of eternal values – love, forgiveness, compassion, faith. For Ukrainians, Christmas on December 25 has become not only a religious holiday, but also a sign of cultural and spiritual identity.
Despite technological progress and the rapid pace of life, Christmas stops a person, makes them think, look deep into themselves, and remember their loved ones. This is the time when the family comes together, when the words “Peace”, “good” and “hope” take on a real meaning.
Christmas is not just a date in the calendar. This event changed the course of history, shaped the culture of peoples and continues to inspire millions of people around the world. In Ukraine, Christmas on December 25 is a holiday of faith, tradition and unity. Through history, carols, prayers and family warmth, Christmas reminds us of the main thing – God’s love for Man and man’s vocation for good.
May the Nativity of Christ always be a source of light, hope and peace in everyone’s heart.
